Portugal Villa 231 is an exquisitely converted, village house located within the castle walls of the village of Salir, to the North of Loulé.
Great care has been taken to retain its original character and charm, leaving exposed rock walls in parts of the house combined with a blend of modern building techniques - one of the walls is part of the original castle.
The house is furnished with many traditional wooden pieces as well as antiques and artifacts from the last two centuries.
The kitchen is modern with fitted pine units, the traditional bread oven has been retained and there is a dining area with draw leaf table seating eight.
Off the hall though a stone arch there is a small, cosy seating area with inglenook, sofa and a television; there is also a larger sitting room on the first floor.
Most of the bedrooms enjoy views across the Caldeirão hills and all of the windows have the traditional inner wooden shutters to keep out the midday sun (some of the bedrooms have traditional hanging rails as opposed to conventional wardrobes).
The door at the top of the stairs leads outside to the completely enclosed cobbled swimming pool terrace with almond and lemon trees, a small lawn and a gated upper terrace with outstanding views over the valley and hills.
A glass fronted pool table room overlooks the lawn and has an adjoining summer dining room with a small kitchenette (including dishwasher) and shower room which houses the washing machine.
Salir is a typical Algarvean village built around the 1ith century Moorish castle.
The Rocha de Pena Natural Park is close by and ideal for hiking.
There are two main routes through the park (one easier than the other) and both take in the amazing views over the valley – if you are very lucky you might spot an eagle or two.
There are several coffee shops and snack bars in the village along with a couple of restaurants, a bank, post office, chemist, children’s playground and a market.
